The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages 13.5 million acres of land in New Mexico. Many of the lands are managed primarily for oil and gas exploration and livestock grazing and do not have high recreational value. Still, there are other areas that offer fantastic opportunities for creation including two new national monuments – the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks and the Rio Grande del Norte. There are also BLM Wilderness areas including the Sabinoso, which only recently gained public access.
