The Cowboy Trail is a .8 mile trail that begins at a junction with the Apache Kid Trail and ends atop San Mateo Peak.
Trail Condition: Moderate
From the junction with the Apache Kid Trail – Trail #43, the Cowboy Trail heads uphill to the northwest. The first section this trail is littered with downed trees to an extreme degree. Even so, the underlying trail was in good condition and easy to follow despite the gymnastics required to climb up and around the many obstacles.
The trail clears after a little bit and climbs gently through an aspen grove to the large flat summit, which features a largely intact fire tower and cabin.
